THE EXHIBITION: Ellington-White Contemporary in collaboration with The Arts Council Fayetteville Cumberland County will present a National Art Exhibition that investigates Roots of Change in traditional and contemporary Black American Visual Art, from January 18 – March 13, 2021. In Roots of Change: Reaching Back/Moving Forward we ask artists to explore the politics of racial identity and historical memory, past, present and future, through their visual practice. To examine, interrogate and reflect on dominate cultural narratives of Black experiences across the Diaspora through the lens of contemporary cultural idioms. Artists are asked to freely interpret the various ideas discussed within the theme. The exhibition will include art works and African artifacts from the Fayetteville State University collection of African and African American art and other collections.


ELIGIBILITY: Open to professional artists members of the National Alliance of Artists from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (NAAHBCU) and invited guest artists of the exhibition curators and NAAHBCU. All work must be original and completed within the last five years and not shown in this area before.


SPECIFICATIONS: Artists may submit up to three (3) images of current works for the jury and selection process. The works should have been completed within the last five years and not exhibited before in Cumberland County, NC. Artwork sizes may not be smaller than 12” x 12” or larger than 60” x 60 x 60”(We will not cover the return shipping on oversized or heavy work. Call to discuss). Selected work images will be used for the exhibition catalogue, virtual exhibition, marketing and media uses.

Submission of Digital Images:

         File Type: JPEG or JPG only.

         File Dimensions: 1,200 pixels or greater on the longest side.

         File Size: Under 5 MB.

         Color Profile: sRGB

AGREEMENT: Submission of an entry to this exhibition constitutes an agreement on the part of the entrant to all the conditions set forth in this prospectus. Ellington-White Contemporary Gallery and The Arts Council reserves the right to reproduce accepted entries for publicity and promotional purposes. Accepted work that differs from the digital juried image may be excluded from the exhibition.


ACCEPTED WORKS:  Accepted works must arrive ready to install by Monday, January 11, 2021. Work received outside of this timeframe may not be exhibited. The Ellington-White Contemporary Gallery and the Arts Council reserve the right to exclude any work that is not professionally presented. All works must remain on display for the entire exhibition. All works must be properly framed, wired and ready to hang. No saw tooth hangers. All works must be sturdy enough to withstand handling and exhibition works requiring extraordinary installation will be declined.


INSURANCE:  The works will be insured while on site at the exhibition locations.  Artists should insure their shipped works. Neither Ellington-White Contemporary, The Arts Council Fayetteville Cumberland County or Fayetteville State University are responsible for any occurrences, damaged, lost or destroyed works due to shipping.


SHIPPED WORKS: Ship to Arts Council Fayetteville/Cumberland County, 301 Hay Street, Fayetteville, NC 28301. All work must be packed in reusable containers. DO NOT use Styrofoam peanuts when packing artwork. Accepted artworks will be given instructions on shipping Artwork should be shipped UPS, USPS, or Fed Ex. Ellington-White Contemporary and Fayetteville State University will return the all unsold works.


HAND DELIVERIES: The Ellington-White Contemporary, 113 Gillespie St, Fayetteville, NC 28301, during normal operating hours Wednesday - Saturday, 11:00 am - 4:00 pm or by appointment. At the end of the exhibition, hand delivered entries may be picked up March 17 - 20, 2021 during normal gallery business hours. Accepted work left for 30 days after the designated return dates will be disposed of at the discretion of the exhibition committee.

     • Digital Entry Submission for gallery publications and on-line exhibition: December 1.

     • Email notifications of accepted works will be sent on December 4.

     • Print information deadline (letters, bios, statements and press materials): December 12.
