A National Juried Exhibition
Ellington-White Contemporary in partnership with the Fine Arts Series at Fayetteville State University presents current and former Visual Art Education Professionals in a national juried exhibition to showcase the arts as an essential part of a complete education. The exhibition in celebration of National Arts in Education Week, September 8 – 14 will be on view until November 2nd at both locations. The exhibition features sixty-two wonderful works of art from thirty-six artists who are also art educators representing twenty different states.

My art signifies my struggle with society and is an expression of my response to it. I am struggling with my military history and experiences versus my current political views; my love of nature and the earth versus my addiction to social media and the spoils of the Industrial Revolution; and struggles within my relationships. My most successful works of art have been created in moments of deep self reflection, completely alone with my thoughts and available materials to create.
This show highlights my use of aqueous media and its interaction with a special paper to create dynamic environments with a basis in nature. Each part alone would not be enough to cultivate the aesthetic complexity that I seek, but the interactions between the different concentrations of pigment and water, the subtle pull of gravity on the fluids over minor topographical variations, the force applied to the distribution of the media, and the humidity and temperature of the air surrounding its evaporation, all of these factors cause it to become something else entirely. Natural phenomena dictate the guise of the marks while I guide its direction.

Artist Statement:
“My work represents a method of integrating opposites into a state of harmony and balance. Elements of design referenced in African, African American or multi-cultural imagery create a catalyst to begin my movement through the visual language that informs my artistic voice. Through the work I am responding to the tension generated by a resounding past and an insistent present. Each work is a struggle to balance personal attentiveness to the larger picture while maintaining some commitment to more intimate concerns about painting.”
The works celebrate life, family histories and tributes to artists. I express certain social realities concerning the world while exploring aesthetic qualities of being black in America and addressing the literal symbology of contemporary blackness thereby creating a pliable structure for intuition, improvisation and chance.
My interests in mixed media painting and drawing are influenced by material surfaces and scale. The material elements of sand, soil, glue and other resources add tactile textural surfaces that contribute to the additive and subtractive developments of my artistic voice. The physical application of resources with my hands and splattering textural elements onto unrelated surfaces is part of my process to see how they integrate into forms.

The Cumberland County Public School Art Teachers held their first exhibition in years at The Ellington-White Contemporary Art Gallery. Over sixty- eight works of art in a variety of mediums were submitted from thirty-two art instructors.
Over one hundred people attended the opening reception that was held Saturday, March 1, 2014 from 3 to 6 PM.
